the curious incident of the dog in the night-time by Mark Haddon
This is not the usual type of book that I pick up to read. It’s not Tom Robbins, Matt Ruff, Stephen King, Sci-fi, or Horror. That said, it was good.
The story centers around a young boy, Christopher. Christopher is investigating, or as he says in the novel, “detecting”, the murder of his neighbor’s dog Wellington. He’s not your typical 15 year-old boy though, as he knows every prime number up to 7,057 and calms himself by counting the cubes of cardinal numbers (1, 8, 27, 64, etc).
It’s an interesting story, very different, I think, from most of the other books on the shelves today. Overall, I thought the story was a little on the short-side and that some of the other characters in the book besides Christopher were underdeveloped. However, that may have been the intention, because it’s supposed to be a book that was written by Christopher himself, and he’s definitely not a people-person. He prefers math and physics to poetry and fiction, doesn’t understand make-believe or why people would tell a lie. Imaging things that aren’t real makes his head hurt and the last thing on earth he would like is for anyone to touch him.

Long time…
It’s been a long time since I’ve added an entry.
I’ve got grand plans for the website, I just never seem to have the time (or use it, when I do have it) to update it. In the future, I’d like to add a list of my books and a whole log of the books I’m reading and the little mini-reviews I like to write.
Currently, I’m reading The Dark Tower VII – The Dark Tower by Stephen King. It’s the last in the long, long Dark Tower series, and I’m not quite sure I want to finish it because that will mean I’ve reached the end.
The other big news of late is my trip to Las Vegas. Darren and I are going to Las Vegas for Thanksgiving. I’m finally going to meet his parents, I hope I’m up for it.
Maintenance…
The weblog will be down temporarily while undergoing maintenance and renovations.
Not such a bad Monday after all…
Monday started off as a pretty crappy day for various reasons, but it’s turning out to not be so bad after all.
My boss just came in to talk to me to tell me that when my contract expires (which is later this month, apparently my contract has to be renewed every 3 months with the agency), he’s giving me a raise. AND, on top of that, starting possibly in June, they are going to make me a full-time, regular employee with benefits!
That paid vacation I’ve been hoping for may be coming sooner than I thought. Of course, this means I’ll lose out on paid overtime (yet gain health insurance, sick leave, and paid holidays), but I’m hoping that since he mentioned the middle of June, it might just work out that I’ll get mucho overtime between now and then and convert to being salaried just in time for the return to normal hours.
