record running week :)

According to RunKeeper, I ran 14.2 miles last week.  And that’s not including my 4 mile hike last weekend!  🙂

Typically, I’ve run 10 miles or less per week, with a few weeks around 13 miles.  Most of these were during my training for the San Jose Rock ‘n Roll 1/2 marathon (my first 13.1!) last year, and the record week was just before I got sick in September, when I ran just over 25 miles in one week.  Compare that with the two weeks leading up to the race (which was when I was sick), I only managed one easy run (3.5 miles) and one long run (9.25 miles).  In fact, I am still amazed that I ran that race and that I finished without dying…

I also ran my fastest 1 mile on the treadmill this week.  But, since I’m so slow, I’m not going to tell you what my pace was!  I am pretty sure I have run a mile faster, but this is the fastest-that-could-not-possibly-be-a-result-of-GPS-error.  🙂

treadmill vs outdoor running?

Thanks to my wonderful mom, I now have my very own treadmill!!!  No more running in the rain, the cold, or the dark.

But wait.  I LOVE running in the cold.  The rain, not so much, but I don’t hate it.  And running in the dark I avoid, only because of safety issues and the lack of other people on the trails I run after dark.

Since I’ve had the treadmill (it’s been assembled and running for about a week), I have run outside 0 times.  Even this weekend, when I had nice sunny but chilly weather.  My dog, Roxy, loves to go running with me too.

But here’s what happens now.

Weekday mornings:  Gee, I could get up an hour early and run outside, or I could snooze the alarm.  So I snooze.  Then at 7pm (or sometimes 11pm), I start to feel guilty about skipping my run and hit the treadmill.

Weekend: Saturday was a special case because I had plans from 9am to 7pm — it was dark when I got home.  And I don’t do 6am runs on the weekends!  On Sunday though, I procrastinated just long enough that I didn’t have time to fit in my scheduled 40 minute run. I did run, but at  9pm on the treadmill.

Poor Roxy hasn’t been out running in over a week.

exercise & nutrition

24 hours post cross-training (a functional strength training circuit designed for runners that I got from Pear, and I feel relatively un-sore, particularly compared to the previous workout (the same thing, minus the weights).  I believe I owe it all to a post-workout protein shake.  Gotta love Vega Energizing smoothies!

Based on this, I may need to think my normal exercise & nutrition routine…. which is, well none.  I often run first thing in the morning (or first thing after getting out of bed at least), on an empty stomach, and then don’t eat or drink anything but water on my runs.  After a run, sometimes I will eat, typically not immediately after.

goal progress!

Last night, after reading until 1:30am, I finally completed Les Miserables! And that takes care of the “easy” goal for reading, but I feel this one was almost too easy, considering I finished 70% or so of the book in 2012! I will post a review shortly, probably not until later this week, after i’ve seen the move. I might do a combo review of the book and the movie at the same time, so stay tuned!

As for running, I think I should have made a goal to “run faster” but I think that will come with proper training.

Today’s run
distance: 4.25 miles
time: 55:30
speed: 4.6 mph (yes, I am slow!)

Roxy and I ran up past the 49ers stadium construction and down the Guadalupe River Trail.  This pic is not from today, but a recent picture from a morning run last month.
