Day 20 – Fierce Fairytales

As I mentioned earlier this week, I’m reading Fierce Fairytales by Nikita Gill. This collection of poems and stories reminds me of the novels of Gregory Maguire. Ever seen the Broadway hit musical Wicked? That’s probably his most famous novel.

Similar to Maguire, Gill is turning the fairytales on their heads, questioning what’s truly good or evil. Is anyone or anything purely good or evil? Have we heard the whole story, or just part of the story? These are the questions that are asked, and sometimes answered in Fierce Fairytales.

I am wholeheartedly enjoying this, and I wanted to share this one quote with you.

That idea … it was you. You are the universe’s fairytale come true.

Fierce Fairytales by Nikita Gill

If you are in need of some inspiration or a different way of looking at things, at life, at yourself, the world around us, I highly, highly recommend reading this. Life is certainly not a fairytale — but what if it was? What if the big bad wolf was really a friend? What made Cinderella’s step-mother wicked and what made her step-sisters so awful? Everyone has a story, even the bad guys.

Day 19 – bored yet?

I’m finding it difficult to have interesting topics to blog about EVERY DAY!

Fridays are particularly difficult. It’s the end of the week, and I just want to shut my brain off. If I’m smart, I’ll schedule a book review or something else ahead of time for next week.

It doesn’t help that on Fridays we have an office happy “hour” starting at 4, and on top of that, I’m invited to a “pre-gaming” meeting at 3. So, I’ve been drinking for about 6 hours now.

The Spazmatics are doing homeageddon show #3 tonight, and while that’s entertaining, it’s not the same as usual life — being out and going out.

Sometimes I wonder if this blog is for me, or for you, dear reader. And in the end, I decided, it has to be for me, because I cannot know, or control, how you react,

However, I do have more content that is interesting in the works. So…. if you’re not completely bored yet, keep reading and let’s see where this goes!

Somehow, even though it’s 2020, media upload to WP sucks. I apologize if my photos aren’t displaying properly and I’m working with my hosting provider to figure this out.

Day 18 – National Poetry month?

Apparently April is National Poetry Month!!

In celebration of National Poetry Month, I’ll be reading Fierce Fairytales: Poems and Stories to Stir Your Soul.

Here’s my contribution, although it’s not new. It’s just newly published (here).

The Vampire
His skin is cool to the touch,
his lips red as blood.

The body is dead, yet the mind lives on,
the soul is gone, but the heart still beats.

This unnatural creature walks at night;
he is on the prowl, a hunter of the darkness.

He preys on young women, small children, and men.
But he is also a lover, a handsome man.

A man who is no longer alive,
a soulless being, who knows only immortality.

He cannot love and cannot feel joy,
but also cannot die.

He would give anything for love,
his life, his dark gift, his immortality.

This sacrifice he would make,
for the sake of love.

This woman, his one true love, is gone.

With her dark brown eyes,
and long, dark hair
she is impossible to forget.

He's roamed the earth
for hundreds and thousands of years,
desperately seeking his love,
unable to forgive himself,
unwilling to accept what cannot be undone.

The inspiration for this poem is (clearly) my love of the Interview with the Vampire novels by Anne Rice. Also, Brad Pitt was excellent in the movie. 😀

Day 17 – PJ day is every day now

Today was Onesie Wednesday (aka PJ day) at work. I won’t be posting any photos of my outfit, even though the frog onesie is very cute, it’s not a flattering look.

Instead, here’s Indy and Roxy in their matching PJs. They definitely don’t like wearing their PJs, and they did NOT want to pose for this pic. But we don’t always get what we want, do we? 🙂

Did anyone else see the news that Walmart says tops are selling like hotcakes but no one is buying bottoms (pants)? This is what our world is coming to, we’re becoming a society of couch potatoes who don’t even put on pants!
